Ten Things to Do When There Is No Power

Ten Things to Do When There Is No Power

Ten Things to Do When There Is No Power” by Joan Y. Edwards

Have you ever noticed these ten things you inevitably do when you don’t have electricity?  I have done these several times when the power went out. I felt so silly. You may have done them, too. We can all feel silly together. That makes it fun. I hope these make you laugh.

Ten Things to Do When There Is No Power

  1. Turn on the nearest light switch.
  2. Put a TV dinner in the microwave and turn it on.
  3. Hit the TV remote to turn on the TV.
  4. Turn on the lamp in your bedroom.
  5. Get ice cream out of the freezer and don’t understand why it’s a milkshake instead of regular ice cream.
  6. Push the control to open the garage door.
  7. Turn on the radio.
  8. Turn on your flashlight and discover the batteries are dead and you do not have new ones to replace them.
  9. Drive to the closest restaurant, not realizing they don’t have power either.
  10. Reach to call your friend with your cell phone and realize it has no charge left.

Okay. Here are ten things you could do without power. Use your sense of humor.

  1. Rest.
  2. Sit and hold hands with your significant other.
  3. Pray.
  4. Go outside and look at the stars if it’s night time.
  5. Use your cell phone to call a friend if you have data.
  6. Sing your favorite childhood songs.
  7. Drink plenty of water.
  8. Tell ghost stories or stories that make you laugh
  9. Name three things for which you are thankful and why.
  10.  Figure out the first three things you are going to do when the power comes back on.

Please share the silly things you’ve done when you have no power. Share what your main character might do if he or she was faced with no power situation.

  1. When I was a kid, we used to play cards or board games by oil lamp when the power went out. We didn’t need a power failure to tell ghost stories. Our grandmother’s woodshed worked quite nicely. Pitch black in there.

As far as the silly things go, done them all and it’s so much easier to do them when it’s light out.

We were without power for 4 days during the ice storm in January 1998.

    1. Dear Melanie,
Thank you for writing. Thanks for sharing your experiences when the lights were out. You’re right. We don’t need a time without power to enjoy ghost stories. Tell me more about the ghost stories in the woodshed. That sounds like a good part of a book. Whoa! Four days is a long time without power!

      Enjoy your day being you.

  2. Recently, I had to keep reminding my granddaughter that taking things out of the fridge or freezer when there is no power will hurt the rest of the items in there (repeatably).

My main character would enjoy the natural beauty that is Hawaii in the latest book that I am writing while the power was out.

    1. Dear Maureen,
Thank you for writing. It’s a pleasure to hear from you. I know what you mean about reminding people to stop taking things out of the refrigerator or freezer when there is no power. Part of our minds, forgets we have no power. The other part that remembers a bowl of ice cream takes over.

      Enjoy your day being you,

  3. Joan,

I don’t like to use candles during a power shortage. Who needs a fire in addition to other problems? I have learned to keep a flashlight by the bed, although if I remember, my phone acts as one too. Aren’t we silly at times?

Suggestions of things to do when the power is out. If you have a battery operated radio, listen to it. Best time to own a boom box. Lol! Do I have one? No. Hmmm…add to the shopping list. Don’t forget the batteries. Amazon anyone?

    1. Dear Linda,
Thank you for writing. Thanks for sharing your ideas with us. I agree with you about candles. Flashlights are good beside the bed, but we must remember to have good batteries close by. Listening to a battery-powered radio is an excellent idea when the power is out.

  4. Every time I went into the bathroom, I tried to turn on the lights. I also tried to flush the toilet even though we have our own well and it runs on electricity. Major bummer. My husband and I gave up on flashlights and bought the lights on a band that one wears on one’s head. They are much more useful because it leaves both hands free to do whatever one must.

    1. Dear Bonnie,
Thank you very much for writing. Goodness, it is so easy to try to turn on the lights when we have no power. I like the idea of wearing lights on a band on your head. I’ll look into that. Thanks for sharing your experience and ideas!
