Ask Joan: Linda asked, “What is an easy way to access music on an iPhone?”
Linda says: What is an easy way to access music on an iPhone? I know how to go to a search engine and find a tune . I would like to help my mom, who is on palliative care, have access in an easier way–perhaps set her up an app, play list (I do not know how to do this) or something. Suggestions?
Here’s my answer to Linda’s question:
The best app for an iphone I found was:
Pandora app
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/pandora-music/id284035177
Here’s why I like the Pandora app:
You can let Pandora access your microphone on your phone, then you can ask Pandora to play certain types of music for you, you can say, “Hey, Pandora play Elvis Presley” and it plays Elvis Presley music.
“Hey, Pandora, play 50’s music,” and it plays a radio station that plays 50’s music.
“Hey, Pandora, play the top 10 Country Hits,” and it plays a radio station that plays country hits.
“Hey, Pandora, play classical music.” and it plays a radio station that plays classical music.
When it plays a song, it shows the lyrics and other artists who sound like the one to which you’re listening.
Pandora has a premium program that you can pay extra to listen to specific songs or watch an ad to listen to a certain song.
Free software to download to a computer:
Freemake Music Box
Download to computer from https://www.freemake.com/free_music_box/
Freemake has an app but I couldn’t get it to go to my iphone from where I live. Perhaps you’ll have better luck.
If you or someone in your family wants to help set up a play list for your Mother, they can easily do that using the software you can download to a computer.
Here’s why I like Freemake Music Box:
- You can put the name of a song you want to listen to and the artist. It will show you examples of that song. You click on the + sign and it is added to your play list. (My Play List).
- It will begin to play all the songs on your list when you start at the top.
(They have an app for an iphone but it says it is unavailable for Pineville, NC where I live, when I tried to download it.)
There are many apps out there for music that cost money. These are free and don’t have a lot of ads.

Thanks so much for answering my question. Very helpful! I added Pandora to my phone so I could try it out. I’ll share my phone with my mother so she can see if she wants it on her phone! Thanks again.
Dear Linda,
You are very welcome. Thanks for letting me know that you added Pandora to your phone so you could try it out. I hope it works out great for you and for your sweet Mother.

Music For All Seasons fosters human interaction and healing, through the art of live musical performance,
bringing our programs to Youth At Risk, Veterans, Seniors, and Hospitals and Hospices. By facilitating the performance of live musical events in a wide range of institutions – including children’s hospitals, retirement facilities, juvenile detention centers, nursing homes, medical centers, halfway houses and prisons, and veteran’s facilities – MFAS helps aid the physical, mental, and spiritual healing processes. Also by solidifying the commitment of professional musicians to serving special audiences, and creating regular volunteer opportunities to serve local communities, MFAS fosters stronger, more interconnected communities.
Dear For All Music,
Thank you for writing. It’s great that your Music for All Seasons provides music for the caregivers, the youth, people in hospitals, and others. That is amazing, wonderful, and healing for all. Linda wanted an app her Mother could use with her iphone.
May God bless you and all the people who are working with you.

I have benefited from live musical performances in a hospital. What a blessing.
Dear Linda,
Thank you for writing! That’s awesome that you’ve benefited from live musical performances in a hospital. You’re right. It’s a blessing when people come to hospitals and perform to lighten the hearts of all those in the hospital and those visiting the hospital.
