“A Tribute to My Mother, Ethel D. Meyer” by Joan Y. Edwards
Thank You, Mother
A Tribute to Ethel D. Meyer
Thank you
for giving me life.
for helping me through strife.
Thank you
for washing my toes and curling my hair.
for sewing my clothes to show that you care.
Thank you
for cooking hot dogs, beans, and applesauce on Monday nights. It gave Judith, Janet, Butch and me stability.
Thank you
for leading our Camp Fire Girls’ Troop because
being chosen to lead a teen discussion of “How to Add Charm to Your Personality” at Camp Fire Girl Day Camp boosted my self-confidence to 110.
Thank you
for teaching me to bake simple tasty cakes, meatloaf, and German-fried potatoes.
Thank you
for teaching me that the greatest respect you can show for yourself and others is to accept the answer “no” without hatred or resentment.
Thank you
for teaching me the art of forgiveness
and unconditional love.
Thank you
for buying Aunt Kitty’s 1950 Plymouth for me.
I learned to treasure and take care of my old transportation and it would last until I could get a newer one.
Thank you
for instilling the wisdom of being satisfied when I did the best I could with my studies, even if I didn’t get an A, all the time.
Happy Mother’s Day! I know you’re up there in Heaven with all the other wonderful Mothers from our world since the beginning of time. Enjoy yourself today.
Love,
Your daughter,
Joan

Beverly: A great tribute to your Mom, Joanie. What I learned from my Mom is that “home” is being surrounded by those you love (and who love you, especially when you are not very lovable) no matter where the house is!
Dear Beverly,
Thank you for writing. It is so cool to still be friends and in contact with you since 1954 when we both lived on Crutchfield Street in Falls Church, Virginia as teenagers. Now the lesson you learned from your Mother was a wonderful one. You’re right, sometimes we feel like we are not very lovable and family and friends who love us surround us and help us accept ourselves as we are and that we are indeed very lovable.
Celebrate you and your compassion for others

Joan,
This was a lovely tribute to your mom. I enjoyed reading it.
From my mom, I learned that if I tried my hardest but still needed help, she would be there for me.
Dear Linda,

Nice sentiments, Joan. I’m sure your children treasure you just as much. All 3 of my children, plus our daughter’s girlfriend and our son Dean’s wife sent me their love. Sarah

Joan,
A great tribute–one with lasting benefit through all of time!
Much love,
Linda
Beautiful tribute. I usually post something at Mother’s Day but this year, I totally forgot. Yesterday (May 13) would have been my mum’s 90th.
Dear Melanie,
Thank you for writing. I’m glad you thought it was a beautiful tribute. Any day is a good day to pay tribute to our Mothers. When the time is right, you’ll post something appropriate for these times. You are good at that.
Stay well and safe

A heartfelt tribute. Your mom was an inspiration and perfect role model. Where would be without our moms! ❤️💕
Dear Joan Reid,
Thank you very much! You are right. We are lucky we had good Mothers who inspired us.
I hope you had a Happy Mother’s Day!
Sincerely,
Never Give Up

Your poem helped me to reflect on the many blessings I received from my mom. Being a daddy’s girl growing up, I didn’t really appreciate the many gifts on living that my mom provided. Happily, we had time to grow closer and express our feelings and love as I became an adult and saw my mom with eyes of reality and truth. I thank God for that journey and gor her love.
Dear Diana,
Thank you for writing. I am happy that my poem helped you remember the wonderful things your sweet Mother did for you and taught you. I am very glad that your parents had you. You are a good example of doing so many unselfish things to help others. Both your parents are smiling and so proud of you.
Enjoy being you.
Never Give Up
Love,
Joan
