“Do Something That Makes You Smile Today” by Joan Y. Edwards

It is important for your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being to do something that makes you smile every day of your life. Chances are you spend most of your day doing things to help others. It is essential to take a few minutes of time for you. Or things have got you so tense, you can’t relax. Do something that makes you smile today and every day. It’s healing. It is a gift you deserve. It is a gift you need. You may be working from early morning to night. You may be stressed from caring for others.

God says  in Matthew 22:37-40. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself.

You may focus on helping others smile. Now it’s your turn. Once a day for at least 10 or 15 minutes, do something that is fun for you. It doesn’t have to cost a lot of money. It can be enjoying nature outside your window. Do something that makes you smile on the inside and the outside. It will help you be more at peace. It will help you accept yourself as you are. Truly wonderfully made.

What’s fun for you? What might make you smile. Here are a few ideas.

  1. Say a prayer of gratitude for your life and for little things that make you smile.
  2. Read your favorite scripture from the Bible
  3. When I was taking care of my Mom, when someone came to watch her for me, what was fun for me was…make a guess…Yes. You got it. Sleeping for an hour was fun for me.
  4. Take a warm bath.
  5. Take a hot shower.
  6. Walk in a garden, a park, or down your street.
  7. Watch one of your favorite movies.
  8. Drink a cup of hot tea or hot chocolate.
  9. Call a friend. Ask them to share a funny story or good news with you.
  10. Listen to your favorite music.
  11. Draw or paint a picture.
  12. Read a book or look at comics to help you smile.
  13. Get a massage. Ah. A soft massage is so comforting.
  14. Get a manicure or pedicure. Getting polish with sparkles in it makes me smile. I’ve seen men getting manicures and pedicures, too…with no polish.
  15. Play a game.
  16. Take silly pictures.
  17. Do a google search for fun things to do near you. Amazing ideas will come up.

Each of you has many things that make you smile, that brings you joy. These are the things that are good for your mental, physical, and spiritual well-being. They will help you relax and enjoy being you. Go for it.

Why Don’t They Listen to Me?

Why Don’t They Listen to Me

There are different stages in life. No one likes to go through what I call, “Nobody Listens to Me.”

When I call someone on the phone, they don’t call me back.

Or I tell someone close to me, “Isn’t that a cute stuffed animal? I had one like it when I was a child.”

The other person says, “That’s a cute stuffed animal. Isn’t it like the one you had when you were a child?”

Or

Why won’t they listen to me? Thanks Pixabay.

I’m driving down the road. I say to the person in the car with me. “Look there’s a new Wendy’s restaurant on the right.”

A minute elapses.

The other person says, “Look there’s a new Wendy’s Restaurant on the right.”

You can see the steam coming out of my ears, can’t you?

How do you resolve this problem?

Chances are the other person may not change. They may not have the gift of listening that you are trying to unwrap.

Pray for patience.
Tell God the things no one else hears. He hears and understands every emotion you are feeling.

Figure out a way to laugh.

Be a good listener. Oops. Did you catch yourself not being a good listener…uh oh. Whaat! You are not perfect either. Well. It happens to the best of us, expecially me.

Here are hints:

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.
Be a good listener.
Choose when to share important things with others.
If they seem to be worried about something else. Wait until later to  share your story.

Do major listening.

Honor the silence.

Don’t tell things with a high priority  while the TV is going full blast. When you call someone on the phone, make sure it’s a good time to talk. If not, perhaps they will call you back at a mutually good time..

Don’t tell things with a high priority when the listener is upset about something in his/her life.

Take time to do something fun for you to relax. Chances are you’re too stressed out about other things and this listening thing is just the tip of the iceberg, the frosting on the cake, the skis on the slope.

Pray for patience.
Tell God the things no one else hears. He hears and understands every emotion you are feeling.

Figure out a way to laugh.

Ask the listener to tell you what they heard. Many times the information you share may not be understood in the way you meant. It may have been clear to you, but not so clear to them.

Have a special place to talk. Make sure your needs and the listern’s needs are met. Bathroom, water to drink. Have a special time to talk. Ask them if they will listen.

Try not to complain about someone not listening. It only makes it worse.  I know from personal experience. I’ve done this and it doesn’t work.

Thank people when they are good listeners.

I hope that you have someone to listen when you need a listening ear.

There are people willing to listen to you. Look for them. You will find them. If there are no people around to listen, pets and stuffed  animals do nicely!

Thank you for listening to me.
