“You Can Get a YES” by Joan Y. Edwards

My mother wisely told me, “When you ask a yes or no question, be ready to accept a yes or no answer.”
In 1994, I was dating a man and asked if he would like to come to spend the day with me and he said, “No. He wanted to work on his truck.” That ticked me off. That’s when Mother told me “When you ask someone a YES or NO question, you must be ready to accept a YES or NO answer. If not, you are trying to control that person.”
If you are like me, you certainly don’t want to have control of another person. If you are in control of another person, this means you are responsible for them. I have enough trouble being responsible for myself.
Now here’s the thing that came up recently. I have been programming myself to be ready and accepting of the NO answers, so much that I think I’ve forgotten that I can also receive a YES.
Perhaps you are like me. Perhaps you have somehow gotten programmed to believe the answer to certain questions is always going to be NO, when that is not what you want at all and that is not a fact. It is an opinion. It is a thought you had. It is a perception. Sometimes, where your thoughts go, your experiences travel, too.
Let’s take a goal for instance. Getting published. Getting a new job. Finding a new house. Getting repairs done for a reasonable price. Plug in something you want but have not received.
Perhaps you are like me and somehow your mind has gotten twisted into believing you are not worthy, you are not capable, whatever it is thinking, and the answer comes up NO.
I am telling you today that you can receive a YES. You can receive many YES answers. You can receive an abundance of YES answers to the questions you pose in life.
It is true that you must be ready for a No answer. But it is equally true that you must be ready for a YES answer.
How can you address the concerns that might make a person say NO?  List the reasons they would say YES; list the reasons why they might say NO. For each reason, they might say NO, give three reasons you believe the answer could also be YES.
Or what would make you say NO to a choice or option for you?
I don’t have all the answers. I have hints. I do know this. That you will find the answers you search for. They are out there in this wonderful world of ours.
If you’ve given up trying for a short time, for a long time, try, try again with renewed vigor. With new information. With new reasons why you deserve it. Be prepared for a YES. Also, accept the possibility that the answer could also be a no, but only to say, “I will regroup, study the resources, and try again. I will receive a YES.”
Look for them. Believe that you will find them. Believe that you will receive a YES to the questions you pose. God will help you. He says, “Ask and you shall receive. Believe and it will be given unto you.”

Thank you to Bill Harvey, Cartoonist and friend, who has encouraged me to publish the stories I’ve written and to write a memoir of the funny and/or meaningful stories I’ve shared with him from my life experiences.  I’d sort of lost that confidence in myself to do that. Thank you, Bill.
