Sounds Can Heal

“Sounds Can Heal” by Joan Y. Edwards.

Thanks for being here. I wish I could see you. I especially wish I could hear your voice.

I wrote this blog post today in honor and in memory of my sister, Judith Carolyn Meyer Thomson, who died on March 25, 2012.  She was a year and a half older than me. She and her husband, Lloyd studied about the healing of sounds with Jonathan Goldman http://www.healingsounds.com/. She studied the healing ways of the American Indians who live in the states of Oregon and Washington. This included learning how they made drums and used their sounds for healing. She taught many people across the United States how to make drums and how to use drumming to heal. Michael Drake gave special thanks to her in the acknowledgments of his book, The Shamanic Drum: A Guide To Sacred Drumming: “Special Thanks to: Judith Thomson, whose devotion to ‘the way of the drum’ has been a wellspring of inspiration for me.”

In February 2012 I gave a workshop to the Savvy Wordsmith’s Writing Group in Fort Mill, SC. I did it using the help of Judith’s information about the healing powers of sound. In July 2010 she asked me to create a website about my positive thinking theories. She asked me about that again in February when I called her and told her I was doing the workshop on the healing powers of sound. I told her that I have a website and a blog that I believe does that.

Drum made from deerskin. Drumstick made from Aspen tree.

This is the drum my sister, Judith C. Thomson, her husband, Lloyd, and I made. This drum had 4 sections, 16 parts – similar to our brains.[/caption]

The inside of an Indian Drum has 4 parts and 16 sections to mimic the brain. The top left is the Male. The top right is the female. The bottom left is the God Source – Fires the electricity for each cell every moment we live. The bottom right – I’m clueless.

  • Each of us has a healing sound. The healing sounds can be music from outside us. The most beneficial healing sounds come from within our hearts and minds and its effects spread to all the rest of our bodies:

Although this sound is not something that we hear with our ears, it’s something we definitely understand. Sort of like radio waves that come into a radio and come through the speaker. Or television waves that come through the air and show up on the television.

  • Your emotions are the signs of your thoughts. Change your emotions. This will change your thoughts.

  • Get rid of the negative or limiting thoughts and beliefs. Reinforce the positive life-giving beliefs.

  • Change your thoughts, it’ll change your emotions. Your emotions send signals to your brain. The brain sends its signals to the rest of your body through your spinal cord.

The heart was the first organ in your body that worked. When your heart beat, it sent information to the brain. That is incredible to me.  They don’t know what it is that causes the heart to beat, but it does. I believe it is God that causes it to beat.2.Energy comes to you according to the energy you let go of. What you sow you shall reap. What goes around, comes around.

I think it’s interesting that many fine musicians suffered from deafness. Ludwig van Beethoven was deaf. Beethoven started going deaf from about age 27 and was profoundly deaf by 45.
Johnny Ray had a hearing loss. It goes along with the knowledge that music makes vibrations…that can be sensed in different ways. They still wrote wonderful music although they couldn’t technically hear it.

  • Spiritualists have studied sounds that do different work. You can read about many of them on Jonathan Goldman’s website: http://www.healingsounds.com/

Om -AUM sound (home without the h) inhale – exhale chanting om sound. Visualize your dreams coming true at the end of the breath. Creation of new. It is the name of God. Body speech and Mind:

Ah sound of love – Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh (pronounced like Allah and Buddha:
http://www.healingsounds.com/articles/shifting-frequencies-9.asp  Amen, Ahhh, love and compassion, last breath

Hu sound – whooo- youuuuu buzzing sound with lips almost closed. God realization and enlightenment – name of God -energy for balance and clearing

There are others. I don’t know what they are.

  • Every person has his own healing sound(s). My sister, Judith, said it’s the sound of our own thoughts.

I believe there are also sounds that we can sing or hear and they immediately calm us and give us peace. Perhaps it’s because the music helps us change our thoughts and emotions, too.
“Flip Flap Floodle” song is a healing sound for me:

“Amen,” the song from the movie, Lilies of the Field is another of my favorites:

A variety of music helped heal people in my critique group in Fort Mill, SC:

  1. Pachelbel’s Canon in D
  2. “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” from favorite movie – Wizard of Oz
  3. “Cold Wind Blows” by Eminem http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMeeIvOjIp4&feature=related
  4. “Somewhere over the Rainbow”  LOVE the version by Anna Beaumont.
  5. “When You Wish Upon a Star” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnqgROXTSFw
  6.  “You’re Still The One” sung by Shania Twain  http://www.last.fm/music/Shania+Twain/_/You%27re+Still+The+One
  7. “Moonlight Sonata” by Beethoven (also known as Piano Sonata No. 14 in C# minor).
  • Put life-giving thoughts into your subconscious mind, say and think:

  1. I am thankful for what I have.
  2. I am excited and happy that I’m going to receive what I desire.
  3. Ask and I shall receive.
  4. I plant what I desire in my heart.
  5. I write down what I want as if I already have it.
  6. I visualize what I want as if I already have it.
  7. I sense that I already have it.
  8. I hear the sounds that prove that I already am and have what I desire.  I am…I have…
  9. Change the “I wants” to:

I am
I have
I am excited, happy, and grateful that I earn more than $200,000 before (set your date).
I am grateful, happy, and excited that I have more than one book on the New York best seller list by (set your date).
I am grateful, happy, and excited that I am healthy.
I am grateful and excited that I am able to make a difference in another person’s life

  • Make a tape of you saying affirmations about yourself and then repeat them along with the tape.

  • If your self-confidence is sagging in an area, write out seven life-giving affirmations, to help reach your goal.

Say them to yourself every morning. Say them to yourself every evening. Write your goal on one side of a 3×5 inch card. On the other write, “Ask and you shall receive. Believe and it shall be granted unto you.” In his book, The Strangest Secret, Earl Nightingale says to remember “You become what you think about.”

When you get a negative or life taking away voice in your head, or hear one coming from outside your body – transform this into a life-giving saying. That’s your job to keep yourself living in a healthy world is to transform – change these thoughts. You can’t control what comes into your mind. You can transform the ones you notice. Put a prayer on them. That is change them to a life-giving thought to send to your brain from your heart.

Emoto took water and froze it. Then he put the frozen crystals of water under a microscope. They formed beautiful crystal shapes. Then, he took polluted water and did the same thing. The polluted water did not form a pretty crystal formation. It looked muddy and not at all like a crystal. Then he prayed over the polluted water. Said good things about it, froze it, and put the crystals of water under the microscope. They were less brown and more like a regular crystal. Prayer made a difference. Each prayer or good thought helped the water heal and form a more perfect crystal shape.

The human body is approximately 75% water. The same would be true of your body when you say good things to it. It will heal. Consequently, if you say bad things or other people project negative thoughts or words, it will have a negative effect on the body, mind, and spirit. Put a new pattern of sound over the old words and the old vibrations. The water changes. You can change, too.

For instance, when my husband, Carl, was a little boy, he heard the words, “You are slow. What takes you so long? You are too slow.”

He took those words as being authoritative…the truth. He took these words as a true statement. He became what he was told.  His body received these words and made them come true.  His body, mind, and spirit used all the energy available to keep these words true…to keep the old beliefs active, even though they were not life-giving. If you think you’re in lack, if you think you don’t have enough – everything starts shutting down. Change those negative, untrue statements that run through your mind, body, and spirit. Carl changed what the voices were saying to him. He continues to let go of these negative connotations and beliefs about himself. You can change the limiting beliefs within you. You can change them now. You can transform them. I believe in you.
