Repost: “To Traditionally Publish or Self-Publish” by Karen Cioffi

Whether to publish traditionally or self-publish is the question I get most from my ghosting clients. Most new to the writing arena don’t understand what’s involved with either path. This article will helpfully shed some light on the topic.

Here’s a link to the rest of Karen Cioffi’s article with great advice and resources:

  1. Hello Joan
I like to write screenplays, i had plans on writing a book one day, what i have read getting a book published is hard, i guess it’s all hard, I’m sticking with the screenplays. I guess if you want to write a book, it’s a journey worth taking, Joan, keep in touch

    1. Dear Billy,
Thank you very much for writing. Go where your passion is. If writing a screenplay is your passion, write a screenplay. If you want to write a novel, you can write a novel and then turn it into a screenplay. Tell the story that excites you in the format that excites you and fills you with joy when you are writing it.

  2. Helpful information, Joan. Thank you for reposting. There are so many factors to consider. Going traditional will take longer, but saves money. Self publishing gives the author more control. But no matter which route is chosen, the author still has to do the majority of the promoting. Important to keep this in mind when deciding.

    1. Shawn, I always tell my clients , if they’re unsure of which path to take, to give traditional publishing a shot, even if for six months to a year. The only thing you have to lose is time and some effort.

      1. Dear Karen,
Thank you for writing. It’s great to hear from you. You’re right. It’s a great idea to give traditional publishing a shot. Set a time to try it. Good advice.
