Being Understood Is Worth a Million Smiles and Lasts Forever

Being understood is a great feeling.
You walk along life’s path.
You meet someone and share a story.
When that person shows they understand exactly how you feel…
Ahh! Being understood is a great feeling.
It is worth a million smiles and lasts forever.
People let you know they understand with words, a smile, a hug, a tear, or a nod.
Your whole world opens up. Things look better.
You shout, “I am understood.
I am alive and well.”
Ahh! Being understood is a great feeling.
It is worth a million smiles and lasts forever
Someone listens to you and observes your body language.
They get you.
They get the
intended meaning of your words.
They translate the true significance of your thoughts and feelings.
They color your feelings as true, honest and real.
Ahh! Being understood is a great feeling.
It is worth a million smiles and lasts forever.
I hope that you have someone who understands you.
Someone who listens to you.
Who understands how you feel and why.
Ahh! Being understood is a great feeling.
It is worth a million smiles and lasts forever.
What? You tell me that no one understands you!
I tell you that God understands how you feel.
He loves you and is always ready to listen to you.
He listens when you are happy.
He listens when you are sad.
He accepts your weaknesses.
He gives you wonderful gifts for your strengths.
He forgives you and is always on your side.
He always has your back.
Being understood is a great feeling.
It is worth a million smiles and lasts forever.

  1. I hope you find someone to put this to music–it sounds like it should be a song. Being understood/understanding another person is often the greatest gift we can receive or give another (outside of the gift of faith in the Lord!). When we feel helpless to know what or say to do for someone in deep pain–understanding is the best thing to do.

  2. Dear Carol,
Thank you so much for writing. Oh how sweet of you to say you think that my poem would be great as a song. I will try to make up a song for it. You are right. Understanding us when we are in pain is a great gift and helps relieve much stress from our minds. It promotes healing.

    Love you,
    Never Give Up
    Joan

  3. Sometimes in the midst of a disagreement with my spouse, I want so much to be understood. When the air cools, then I begin to understand him…and we both move to middle ground.
    That’s worth smiles and hugs.
Thank you for your essay, Joan E. Edwards!
Being understood is such affirmation of our feelings.

    1. Dear Joan B. Reid,
Thank you for writing and sharing about the wonderful feeling when you begin to understand your sweet hubby and you both move on to a middle ground of agreement. So awesome. May you always find the higher ground of agreement and understanding with those you love.

      Never Give Up

    1. Dear Melanie,

  4. Another reason to make everyday happenings joyful.l
I also enjoy these moments. They are so relatable.! . The enthusiasm children share as they are discovering the world is necessary for us to re-discover wonder in life.

    1. Dear Dolores,
Thank you very much for writing. You are so filled with joy that it spills over into me whenever I hear from you. When someone understands us, it feels good on the outside and settles inside filling us with gratitude and love. Thank you for being my friend since high school days at Immaculate Conception Academy. You are sort of like the boy in my next blog post telling me things with a “Do you know what?” spirit. So fun.

      Never Give Up
      Do something fun!
      Joan
