“What Are You Going to Feng Shui (Fung Shway) Today?” by Joan Y. Edwards

Do you have a catch-all drawer? Is your closet packed so full of clothes and shoes that there is no where to add one more thing? Does your child’s toy room have toys here, ther, and every where in no certain order? It may be time for Feng Shui (Fung Shway)

By definition, Feng Shui  is an ancient Chinese practice of arranging buildings, objects, and space in an environment to achieve harmony, balance, and positive energy flow

My late husband, Carl, left an empty place for sure when he died, but I am blessed with the wonderful memories and funny stories he gave me during the time I was blessed to be with him.
Carl grew up very poor. He didn’t have much. When he got clothing it was hard for him to give any away. He was so afraid he wouldn’t get more. When I was giving away some clothing to the National Kidney Services, I would ask Carl if he had anything he would like to donate. He said, “No.” I did not push him on it. I let it go because I could see the hurt in his face when I asked the first time.
About 6 months before he passed, he was in the hospital for over two weeks and went to rehab. He asked me to send him another pair of jeans. Then came the problem. Which pair of jeans should I send? There were about 30 pair of jeans in many assorted sizes. I didn’t know which pair to send him. So-oo-o I put them in size order like in a department store. He had been various weights in the 22 years we had been married. I put the size on a hanger and put all the pants of that size behind it. That helped me narrow down the choice of which pair of jeans to send him.
When Carl got home from rehab, I told him. “You know, Carl. If you donate the jeans that no longer fit you, someone who doesn’t have much money will be so excited to be able to buy themselves a great pair of jeans at an inexpensive price.
Carl thought a few minutes. He looked at me and said, “Okay.” So he tried on all the jeans. I hung the ones that fit back on hangers and put them in the closet. The ones that didn’t fit, went into a bag to give away. I told him we were Feng Shui-ing (Fung Shwaying). He smiled.
The next morning, when Carl woke up. He said to me, “What are we going to Feng Shui today?”
So absolutely wonderful!
So I am asking you, “What are you going to Feng Shui today?
Sometimes you have to take everything and make piles of things. Maybe 4 bins, 4 boxes, 4 baskets. 4 garbage bags

You are wise.
You are kind to yourself and others.
You say good things to yourself inside and out loud.

Please leave a comment and let me know a fun story, sweet memory, or problem dealing wtih too much stuff.

  1. Joan, I haven’t seen Feng Shui used in this context, but we have been busy giving away lots of things inherited from our daughter.

    1. Dear Bob,
Thank you very much for writing. That is very kind of you to share things that were your late daughter’s with others. I know that brings you a little joy to know those things are helping someone else.
You are right;my use of Feng Shui is a little different than some interpretations. However, it creates so much good energy to have things that you want and share the energy of some things you don’t want or need with other people. It clears the mind and the house all at the same time!!! Thank you for honoring me since 2010 as a subscriber of my blog. I appreciate you!!!

  2. I started with one junk drawer, and the more i organized over time, ended up with several. Just so many obsolete essentials in the average household. You never consider being in need of a safety pin; wouldn’t consider shopping for a box ; but when you need one — T H A T ‘ s when you appreciate the junk drawer,
    and its mundane treasures.
Enjoyed the story very much, shows how the most memorable moments happen unexpectedly in the course of every day life.

    1. Dear Bill,
Thank you for taking the time to write and share your story with us. I like your account of when you tackled your junk drawer! It is truly amazing how much stuff can go into one drawer. Sometimes the items in our junk drawers are treasures. Keeping it neat enough to find such treasures is the key! Thanks for telling me you enjoyed the story about Carl and his getting comfortable with letting go of things he no longer needed. You are right; his words, “What are we going to feng shui today were definitely unexpected, yet treasured and filled the air with smiles.

Thanks for helping us smile today.
