Use Fun Words: Whojamajigit, Whatchamacallit, and Thingamajig

“Use Fun Words: Whojamajigit, Whatchamacallit, and Thingamajig” by Joan Y. Edwards

I’m certain that whojamajigit, whatchamacallit, and thingamajig are not words that editors would like to see in a refined book or a dissertation.  However,  I love using these words in conversation. My husband, Carl, asked me to explain the meaning of these words that I use once in a while. He’s never heard anyone else say them. I’ve been using these phrases since I was a child.  They are unusual. They sound funny which makes them delightful to hear.

Just say them now: “Whojamajigit, Whatchamacallit, and Thingamajig.

Whojamajigit and hitchamajigit is a person whose name has slipped your mind. Whatchamacallit and thingamajig is an item for which you don’t remember its name or it may be your invention that hasn’t been named yet.

It’s amazing to me that the Hershey Company started creating Whatchamacallit candy bars in 1978. They are still in production today. Wal-Mart and Amazon sell them. Thingamajig is also a candy bar that the Hershey Company first created in 2009. However, Hershey is no longer producing it.

Perhaps a character in a children’s book or a novel might spout out these fun colloquial words! They make me laugh. I hope they will make you laugh, too.

  1. I think Lucille Ball used the word thingamajiggy in one of her I Love Lucy shows. It’s good to have a word to hold your place when you can not find the word you really want to use.

    1. Dear Carol,
Thank you for reading my blog and leaving comments. You brighten my days. I love the word, “Flabberdoozled.” It is a fun-sounding word! I think it will help give oomph to your character’s younger sister.

  2. Joan,
I thought of thingamabob and bamboozled. There are so many fun words that don’t mean much of anything. Thanks for the fun post.
