Second Sunday in Lent

Matthew 17:1-9 New American Bible

Matthew 17:1-9 Bible Gateway New International Version

“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.”

God spoke from the clouds when Jesus was baptized saying, “This is my son in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him.”  They had seen the face of Jesus shining as the sun itself.  They had seen His clothing become as white as light.  Yet, Jesus told them not to tell anyone until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead. How difficult it would have been to keep this secret!

Imagine if you had witnessed this transfiguration.  What do you think you would have wanted to do?  Hurry home and tell everyone you saw on the road.  Ask people what they thought it meant.  Keep it on your mind and try to figure out what Jesus meant by raised from the dead.  The apostles probably discussed this among themselves.  Remembering God’s words, they listened to Jesus and didn’t tell anyone until after Easter.  You don’t have to keep it a secret anymore.  You can tell everyone that Jesus is the Son of God.  You can explain that Jesus is a light for all of us.  He leads us along the path to the Kingdom of God. You can shout and sing from the rooftops.  “God loves you so much that He sent his Son to earth to die so that your sins could be forgiven.”

Say the “Our Father” and say, “All praise and honor to you, heavenly Father and to your son, our Lord Jesus Christ.  Amen.”

“Our Father, who art in Heaven,

Hallowed be Thy name.

Thy kingdom come.

Thy will be done,

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day, our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses,

As we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.  Amen.”
